Chlorine Removal from Water by Biochar Derived from Various Food Waste Natural Materials

Abstract The aim of this paper was to investigate the effectiveness pyrolyzed low-cost food waste natural materials from industry on removal chlorine water. Biochar produced after pyrolysis at 850 o C malt spent rootlets (MSR), walnut shells, and apricot, olive, carob grape kernels. biochars were characterized for their surface area, microporosity, functional groups pH. Continuous flow column experiments conducted varying rates evaluate efficiency remove free total chlorine. initial concentrations in water fed columns 2.0 2.2 mg/L, respectively. all tested ranged 76 92% 80 95%, respectively, with MSR exhibiting highest removal. biochar subjected cumulative volume passed through (162 L/g) exhibited capacity (6 330 mg/g). Olive kernel also reached high (99%), while apricot kernel, seed pulp presented poor removals.
